  • Renewable Energy and the Feed in Tariff Explained

One of the biggest reasons why more people aren’t taking advantage of free solar energy is the fact that solar panels and the cost of the installation is just too high for them to afford. Realising this, the UK instituted the Feed in Tariff that would help them to offset the cost initially with the hopes of the system paying for itself over time. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation on the web in regards to the Feed in Tariff which is why you should take the time to question, “How do Feed in Tariffs Work?”

    Feed in Tariffs Explained

Before you can understand a Feed in Tariff (FIT) it should be said that not every solar PV system will qualify for the FIT. The system must be Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certified and the solar installer must also be registered as an MCS installer. That is a top priority when you begin looking for a solar PV energy system to qualify for the Feed in Tariff. If you want to have the Feed in Tariff explained in terms of your particular energy needs, the best thing to do might be to contact an MCS certified solar installer. This way you will be able to gain information on the size system you would need and what you can expect to benefit based on your average electricity consumption. A Feed in Tariff consultation need not cost anything either. For example, New Energy Futures is happy to provide a free, no obligation consultation at your location so that a proper assessment can be made of your home and which system would best meet your needs.

How Do Feed in Tariffs Work?

If you are new to solar energy in the UK you may not have heard of the Feed in Tariff scheme. This is a way in which government ‘rewards’ you for going green with electricity. After you have an MCS solar PV energy system installed you can earn 41.3p for every kWh of electricity you generate – even the electricity you use in your home! Then, if there is any excess it will be fed backwards into the grid to be utilised by others. For this exported electricity you are paid 3p for every kWh. Then you will also be eligible for discounted rates on any energy you still need to buy. Feed in Tariffs are meant to offset the cost of your installation whilst providing incentive for utilising renewable energy.

New Energy Futures is an MCS accredited solar installation company that employs over 50 MCS certified installers. If you are ready to explore the world of renewable energy you can schedule a no obligation consultation at your home by calling us on 0844 774 1407. We will be happy to do a thorough assessment of your home and discuss your energy needs. Any questions you have about the Feed in Tariff scheme can be answered at that time. Keep in mind that the current FIT rates will not be offered forever so now is the time if you are going to make the switch!
